Donald "Say" Hansen, 90

Memorial services for Don "Say" Hansen, of Cyrus, were held on Friday, March 1, 2024, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus with Reverend Chris Richards officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Donald Loup Say Hansen, 90, wandered into the Pearly Gates, he met Roger Pieske and his Army Buddies and said "Say, do I know you guys?"

He passed away peacefully on Feb 26, 2024, with his wife, Thelma, daughter, Ruth and son, Daryl by his side. He grew up in Clontibret, lower town and attended Cyrus High School. He had wonderful parents, his mother (Lydia) and two younger brothers, Kenny and Dennis. While growing up, he helped with farming and pumping water. Don attended country school and Long Prairie School District (and there also pulled pranks). After graduating high school, he attended the School of Agriculture at the St. Paul Campus for two years (none really in the fall of 1944 for he was working in Minneapolis). He answered the call and was in the 39th Trans. Company Mechanic Division. He left for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., then later shipped out to Germany to serve the country. While in the Army, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal - Germany. He served from 1943 to 1946, while the lower half of his life waited for him to come home.

After serving his country, Don and Thelma tied the knot on June 20, 1946, and had four wonderful children. His salesman career started with Syverson Implement in Morris. Modern purchased the business and in 1956, Don and Thelma moved to Cyrus. In 1965, they moved to Cyrus. He served the Cyrus Community as a volunteer fireman. How he was a member of the town council for several years. He enjoyed camping and snowmobiling with his family. Don was a loving and devoted husband and father. Through the years there were a few trips with the "guys" snowmobiling out west. Later in life, he and Thelma rowed and family with family and friends, even though he hated the water. Next to meeting the daily needs of his Cyrus children, he had a passion for hunting and fishing. He hunted deer, pheasants, ducks and geese and had fought in various shooting contests throughout his hunting career. His Cyrus children, Ben (Benn) Hill of Jamestown, ND., his (Don) Larson of Terrace, Daryl (Bonnie) Thompson of Maryland, Ruth (Marvin) Swanson and Thelma Hanssen, great-grandchildren, Jason (Rebecca) Hill of Cody, Wyo., Heidi (Brody) Richards of West Fargo, N.D., Karlene (Brent) Larson of Clarksville, Tenn., Hannah Larson of Fargo, ND., Samantha (Jimmy) Regan of Warroad, Minn., David Swanson of Cyrus and Carol Swanson of Loreto. 13 great-grandchildren, Kahles (Paul) Chestermollie, Austin Wendorf, Nevah Stegartz, Quinn Reinarts, Sugar Magnolia Hill, Everly Dawn Larson, Wyatt Declity Regan, Neeson, Syvin Maleah Regan, Sydne Regan and two younger brothers, Kenny Hanson of Bloomington and Dennis (Daryl) Larson of Princeton.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph Pedersen and Lydia Hanssen, and his sister, Harold Schneider and son.

Cheryl L. Capp, 72

Cheryl Lynn (Nelson) Capp, of Alexandria, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb 29, 2024, at Arbor Rose Senior Living in Maple Grove at the age of 73 years old.

She was born in Oronville on Wesley and Phyllis (Hill) Nelson on Aug 23, 1951. She lived with her parents in their home on Artichoke Lake. When she was about seven, the family moved to the Rolling Forks farm between Oronville and Isonville. She attended grades 1-6 at Rolling Forks Country School where she was a spelling bee champion and runner-up in the county championship in 1963. She attended grades 7-8 at Isonville and Sr. High, where she graduated in 1969. Cheryl was an energetic, guitarist, pianist and vocalist. In high school, she was known for her beautiful alto voice, was a top sprinter and even arm wrestled some of the high school guys. Yes, she won!

After graduating high school, she attended Park to Fairyview Court. She spent a few summers at camp nurse at Luther Creek Bible Camp. After graduation, she was employed as a nurse in South Falls Hospital. In 1979, Cheryl met the love of her life, Bill Capp, a farmer and livestock feeder. She was in December 1979, and they were married in Glenwod on April 9, 1979. Their partnership has built on love, unwavering commitment and respect. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in April 2029. The legacy of their children, their spouses and grandchildren will become the legacy of the family of Thomas O'Leary, Joshua F of Poste Verde, Fla.; and daughter, Brianna and Brodi Jone, Branson and Brynli of Jacksonville, Fla. As a couple, Cheryl and Bill nurtured their children and grandchildren with love.

After marriage, Cheryl worked as a nurse in Vernon and as a live-in secretary. Later, she worked as a nurse. Later, she worked as a charge nurse and RN in various facilities in starting Philemon and Cheryl to Alexandea is a nurse. Later, she hired by Alexandria Technical College in the early 1990s at LPN instructor, retiring in May 2013. After retirement, she continued work on the church work which she had loved nursing instructor colleagues. During those years, Cheryl was a blessing to her parents in living and in nursing home. Her parents, Wesley Nelson, Phyllis Nelson, and siblings, Dean Nelson, Ellen Hess, Patrick Sisters and many others, gifting, generosity, caring and teaching worship. She had a wonderful voice and sang with her guitar at many weddings throughout the years. She never missed a birthday or honed socialization of the and taught her children to love one another. Cheryl and Bill supported family trips to Minnesota and North Shore. In the Wonderful Falls, Branson and one island resort, Cheryl and Bill enjoyed family trips to Minnesota and North Shore. In 2019, Cheryl was Bill's full time caregiver when he suffered a major stroke. Following his discharge, Bill and Deborah continued treatments. She fought her cancer with so much grace and she never lost her love for life. She last resided in Maple Grove at her Arbor Lakes Senior Living apartment to be near her son and family.

Cheryl is survived by her beloved children and grandchildren; siblings, Deb Larson (Kenton), Ron Nelson (Kay) and Diane Nelson (Al Alex); brothers-in-law, Lorin (Sandy) Fredrickson and Larren Fredrickson; Mary Ann Boe, Indy Keeto and Sue Trexler (Ray); extra special cousins, Karen and Roger Hanson; nine many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She children and their spouses and nieces, Melissa, Jennifer, Joshua and David spent wonderful time throughout her life. Her friends also were a very important part of her during her life.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Capp; her parents; Bill's parents; Lorry Larson and his wife, Judith Fredrickson; her brother-in-law, Bob Roe; and nephew, Jon Jr.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March at the Living Word Community Church in Glenwood. Pastor Nick Grey officiating. A visitation will take place prior, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Burial will take place Saturday. Refreshments and interment to follow with burial at Lake Levin Cemetery near Villard.

James C. Codner, 80

James Carl Codner, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2024, at Nevada Lutheran Home in Starbuck, at the age 80.

Born on Dec 5, 1943, in Long Prairie to Donald and Rosalia (Stepan) Codner, Jim's life was marked by his loving nature, handy skills and thoughtful presence.

Jim was a proud graduate of Long Prairie High School in 1961. He furthered his education at Dunwoody Technical College in Minneapolis, earning a degree in precision machine work that would serve him throughout his career. For over three decades, Jim dedicated himself to the maintenance foreman at Clontibret Home and Glenwood, where his and work were highly valued.

He held a life time membership with Arlis Held at the Catholic Church in Riversville. The young couple made their home in Coonville before set, they had three children: Paul, Christine and Joseph. Arlis sadly passed away on Nov 28, 2011. From then on and new and married Rebecca Seaton on May 24, 2001, blending their lives and families in a beautiful testament to continued love.

Throughout his life, Jim was deeply involved in his community. He served with distinction as a Boy Scout leader for many years, gaining the respect of a generations of leaders and responsibility in young scouts. Jim was honored with the Silver Beaver Award in May 1979 until he retired in May 1999, serving as the Fire Chief from 1996-1998 as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Jim's faith and dedication to charitable work shone brightly.

Jim's hobbies were varied and reflected his love for hands-on activities. An accomplished gunsmith, he found joy in the intricate work of crafting and repairing firearms. Hunting and fishing were not only hobbies, but also provided him with a deep connection with the natural world. Woodworking, too, became a cornerstone of his life; and he was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where his presence will be sorely missed.

Those who knew Jim will remember him as a loving husband, father and grandfather. His humble skills could fix almost anything, and his thoughtful nature made him admired friend and respected neighbour. He was an asset to his community, and his legacy of love, hard work and community involvement.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of family and community service. He is survived by his devoted wife, Rebecca Codner of Glenwood; his daughter, Christine (Michael) Sather of Long Prairie; his son Joseph Codner of Burnsville and Joseph Codner of Montana; and his deceased granddaughter, Trevor, Brian Codner, Daniel (Kyrsten) Sather, Jorn (Dawn) Sather of Glenwood and granddaughters, Dawn (Steven) Hoeschler of Long Prairie, Jade (Jake) Adams, Christian (Sara Hernandez) Dusing and Rose Dusing. His memory will also be treasured by a large extended family of nieces and nephews, friends who felt his impact throughout their lives.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Rosalia (Gill) Willsmith; and his first wife, Arlis.
